Oriole Advocates Tour Avon Schools

Oriole Advocates Tour Avon Schools

Approximately 20 Oriole Advocates boarded two Avon Schools activity vans for a three-hour whirlwind tour of Maple Elementary, Avon High School, Avon Intermediate School West, and the Mary Lee Maier Community Pantry.

Participants enjoyed a festive welcome at the front door of Maple Elementary. Principal Nikki Harrison divided them into groups to experience several grade level classes and related arts experiences along with their dedicated student tour guides. At Avon High School, Principal Matt Shockley and Assistant Principal Dr. Aaron Willis led groups on guided tours of multiple academic areas and, impressively, areas that are under construction. At Avon Intermediate School West, Principal Amber Walters and Assistant Principal Laura Lee had several student guides prepped to lead the Oriole Advocates on visits inside classrooms and related arts spaces. Finally, Executive Director Kristi Kerr talked about the mission and growth of the Mary Lee Maier Community Pantry and gave the Advocates a behind-the-scenes tour of the organization's space.

After the tour, Superintendent Dr. Scott Wyndham led the Oriole Advocates through a debriefing session. Tour participants shared several key impressions:

  • Advocates enjoyed seeing the construction at Avon High School up close.
  • Several were surprised by how quiet AHS was, even after experiencing a passing period.
  • They were impressed by how engaged our leaders are with kids in all the schools.
  • They loved seeing Band, Choir, and Orchestra at the intermediate schools and noted that it's not surprising these groups are so successful at AHS due to the great preparation they're getting in 5th and 6th grade.
  • They were impressed by the STEM experiences students receive at all levels.
  • They loved seeing the recording of student announcements in the broadcast studio at AHS.
  • They were impressed by the spirit of collaboration between students and teachers in their classrooms.
  • They remarked that there was such a high level of engagement from students in lessons at every school.
  • Whether it be our multi-lingual programs or special education programs, they loved seeing the supports available to help our students.
