Avon Students 'Tree-Name' AIS East & West

Avon Students 'Tree-Name' AIS East & West

Because of the move away from the grade 5-6 intermediate school model in the 2025-26 school year — meaning one less school transition during students’ careers in Avon Schools — it became necessary to come up with new tree names for AIS East and West.

How would we ‘Tree-Name’ these schools?

Avon’s kindergarten through sixth grade students have spoken. In August 2025, when AIS East and West open their doors for the first time as kindergarten through 5th grade elementary schools, students will walk into Evergreen Elementary and Willow Elementary.

In November, more than 700 students, parents, staff, and community members participated in an online survey in which they suggested tree names. Suggestions ranged from the thoughtful (the Indiana State Tree is the Tulip Tree) to the silly (Loblolly is a species of pine tree).

In January, 138 k-6 classrooms studied the options and teachers recorded votes from more than 2,600 students. The ACSC School Board was excited to approve our students’ top choices.

AIS East Vote Results:

  • Evergreen Elementary: 1,805 votes
  • Tulip Tree Elementary: 481 votes
  • Aspen Elementary: 361 votes

AIS West Results:

  • Willow Elementary: 1,240 votes
  • Magnolia Elementary: 716 votes
  • Walnut Elementary: 566 votes

Many voters shared that the ‘E’ and ‘W’ tree names are a fitting homage to AIS East and West. Thank you, community members and students, for participating in the process. View the images below to learn more about the process.

Making Room for More Students

Avon Middle School West will open at the start of the 2025-26 school year. Along with AMS North and South, West will serve students in grades 6-8. At the same time, our six elementary schools will begin serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade. To provide the required space to serve an extra grade in our already crowded elementary schools and to be wise stewards of our corporation’s existing facilities, Avon Intermediate Schools East and West will become our seventh and eighth k-5 elementary schools.
