American Legion Flag Education Winners
The American Legion honored two Maple Elementary School students, Grace Ige and Nicholas Sizemore, for their achievements in Flag Education.
Grace and Nick were recognized at the February 13 American Legion meeting at Avon Post 145.
"[Grace and Nick's writings] were used as tie breakers," said Jennifer Miner, the students' teacher. "Grace and Nick got the highest scores in the region for their multiple-choice questions." She explained that the students' writings, which were to be used as tie breakers in the event of a tie, weren't necessarily needed in their case. However, they certainly are patriotic:
"When I see our country's flag I think about the Pledge of Allegiance, the veterans who fought for freedom, 4th of July, Flag Day, and the Revolutionary War." - Grace
"When I look at the flag I think of the people that sacrificed their lives for our country's freedom. I also think of the evolution our flag and country has gone through to be what it is today." - Nick
The students each won a $25 gift and special certificates. Nick has been invited to a special luncheon on March 18 and has moved on to the upcoming district competition.
Congratulations, Grace and Nick!
